Not Fair!

How does this comic relate to psychosocial development stages in adolescents?

And the uses of Psychosocial Nursing continues...

What is one of the first questions a nurse asks you while you are in the hospital?

Are you in pain?

A pain assessment in nursing looks at many aspects....physical symptoms of pain (grimacing, bracing, etc), verbal, cultural, ethnic differences...the list goes on! Psychosocial health assessment goes hand in hand with pain assessment. Read through the following article for an idea on how psychosocial factors such as culture and ethnic background take a major role in assessing pain in surgical patients.

Psychosocial Nursing in Oncology

According to the Oncology Nursing Society, psychosocial nursing assessment is a necessity as it's benefit to the well-being of the patient is great.

How would you combine your knowledge base of Erikson's stages of psychosocial development and assessing an Oncology patient? How might psychosocial nursing interventions differ in a Pediatric Oncology patient versus a Geriatric Oncology patient?

How is Psychosocial Nursing Assessed?

As stated on the last posting, psychosocial nursing is part of the routine health assessment in a holistic nursing approach. There are theorists who have given guidelines as to what stages with corresponding characteristics, that individuals should follow given their age group. One of the most famous psychosocial theorists, Erik Erikson, wrote the stages of psychosocial development that nurses follow to assess their patients. Utilizing these stages, nurses are able to assess psychosocial development. You can view Erik Erikson's stages of psychosocial development in a word document via the URL below through Scribd. Think about how you might apply this to your own nursing assessment in a 2 year old. What about an adolescent?

What is Psychosocial Nursing?

Psychosocial nursing is concerned with both the psychological and social aspects of a patient's life. According to Jarvis (2004), psychosocial nursing is part of a routine physical examination and health assessment to include analysis of lack of knowledge, coping, and rest. It is a part of a holistic nursing model to include social roles, stressors, culture, values, family, etc. All of which contribute to health. Although a holistic approach in nursing is more acceptable today, aspects such as psychosocial health of the patient can be, and is often overlooked. Educating patients, nurses, and future nurses is the solution to fill the knowledge deficit gap and promote well-being in psychosocial health.

Can you think of an instance where psychosocial nursing may have been beneficial to you or a loved one? How might you have approached that problem as a nurse?
